I just watched a clip real shown by John Oliver on his Last Week Tonight show. It featured a bunch of clips of American News Anchors & Weather people greeting their viewers on St. Patricks Day.
All I can say is Wow!!!
Where do these people get their idea's of what Ireland or the Irish are actually like. I mean seriously... what the actual Fuck?.
I'm an English ex-pat living in Ireland. I've lived in County Kerry, probably the most rural Irish part of Ireland for the last 17 years.
My Mother is Irish. My wife is Irish. My son is Irish. Most of my friends are Irish. My dogs are Irish (Setters).
I can honestly say that in over 6200 mornings I've experienced whilst living here... nobody... and I mean FUCKING NOBODY... has ever said "Top of the Morning to Ya".
Ireland is pretty much the same as any other Western 21st Century Country, (a little more damp, maybe).
We didn't live in drafty stone cottages with turf roofes. We have houses with central heating & triple glazing.
We don't all wear Woolly sweaters and stand around smoking our clay pipes listening to fiddle music. We have the same music as everyone else in the World.
We don't huddle around turf fires at night listening, to stories of the Faerie folk. We have the same TV programs as the UK & America & watch them all on our 50 inch flat screen TV's.
We don't all move around on Tractors or Donkeys. We have the same cars as everyone else in Europe.
And people here really... really... really don't EVER say - "Top of the Morning to Ya" or "Where's me Lucky fucking Charms".
